What is Electrolysis

First developed in 1875 by Ophthalmologist Dr. Charles E. Mitchell in treating ingrown eyelashes.

Electrolysis is the method of inserting a fine sterile probe into the hair follicle, followed with emitting an electrical current to destroy the hairs nourishment (Dermal Papilla).

There are 3 different modalities that can be used: Galvanic, Thermolysis, and The Blend.

  • Galvanic (direct current) reacts with your follicles moisture and salt contents to create a natural chemical reaction referred to as Sodium Hydroxide (Lye). This reaction causes a chemical decomposition of the tissue in the lower part of the follicle to destroy the Dermal Papilla.

  • Thermolysis (alternating current) is a heating action inside the follicle that coagulates or desiccates the lower follicle to destroy the Dermal Papilla.

  • The Blend is a combination of Galvanic and Thermolysis in using both the chemical reaction and heat to destroy the Dermal Papilla. This modality is best used in the beginning treatments.

How many Electrolysis Sessions do I need?

  • The total number of sessions needed to remove hair permanently from a particular area will vary from person to person and is customized according to ones individual hair density, coarse and curved hair structure.

  • Most clients return between one-three weeks as needed in the beginning to target the hair follicle in the Anagen growing stage, then schedule further apart with progression.

  • Most client results can be seen between 10-15 months.

  • Committed scheduled appointments will speed up results.

  • A customized plan will be assessed and thoroughly designed just for you and your hair follicle needs.

Is Electrolysis sensitive?

Most clients fall asleep during their Electrolysis session with Amy thanks to her soft touch, technique, precision, and advance machine.

Depending on the individuals hair structure (curved/ coarse), there may be some heat and or mild pinching sensations at times.

Electrolysis side effects

  • Immediately after a session, mild redness (erythema), and or light inflammation (follicular edema) may be seen. These side effects normally dissipate before leaving the spa, or within 10 minutes - 2 hours  following the treatment.

  • Our clients favorite part of an Electrolysis session is finishing with a Cataphoresis treatment. This method uses a calming and cooling positive-ion metal roller over the treated area(s) to recede the blood flow (redness), lower inflammation, and soothe the skin.

Potential Non-Candidates for Electrolysis

Cannot receive Electrolysis:

  • Pacemaker, or Internal defibrillator

  • Accutane (normally used for acne), can thin the skin immensely, effecting the integrity of your skin structure. Minimal of 6-9 months of discontinued use of medication before receiving Electrolysis.

  • Any Medications that may have Heat-Sensitivity!

Doctors Note Required:

  • Heart complications and or concerns.

  • Diabetes - skin integrity may be compromised and requires a doctors note.

  • Epilepsy (seizures)

  • Moles - State of Utah does require a doctors note before treatment.

  • Pregnant you can still get Electrolysis if you are or trying to become pregnant. The Thermolysis modality would be used only (no Galvanic Current), and would need a Doctors written approval.

Separate Concerns:

  • Coumadin (or other blood thinners) have the effect of increasing your rate of skin-bruising from Electrolysis.

  • Warts or Cold-Sores can be worked around, but recommend taking Valtrex with visible Cold-Sores, as to not spread the virus during treatment.

  • Radiograph (X-Ray) treatments may effect follicle activity.

  • Chemical Peel, or other related facial treatments should be scheduled specifically around Electrolysis sessions.

Please fill out the Consent form thoroughly as to protect both yourself and your Electrologist.

Thank You

*Before Your Appointment*

  • Discontinue shaving 2 - 3 days prior to your scheduled appointment, in order for the hair length to be barely surfaced enough that you can grab it with your fingertips. This may be 1 week of discontinued waxing/ tweezing.

  • Hydrate your skin 2 days before your appointment by drinking plenty of water.

  • It's best to avoid caffein and sugar the day of your appointment.

  • Be sure to notify your Electrologist in advance if you have had a recent Chemical Peel and or Acne Facial. Depending on the level of Chemical peel and or Acne Facial, we may wait to schedule 3-14 days pre or post facial.

  • Be sure to notify your specialist in advance if you have a sunburn or skin reaction of any kind near the treatment area.
